I want to give everyone a little insight into the license music for this year's Wii and PS2 games. This year we really tried to bring some of the best license music yet to HOTTEST PARTY2 and DDR X. At the same time we wanted to keep the "feel" of the games separate. Both of these games have a very unique character, so the music that we choose has to promote this.
Our motivation for HOTTEST PARTY2 was to give it a really great "party" feel. Not so much a club party, but more of a rippin' house party. One of those parties where the DJ is playing all types of music, and every track seems to totally fit the mood and make the party more fun. To this end, we went after some of the greatest hits from the last 4 decades. Songs people know and love, even if they had forgotten about them. I want people to have the experience, "Oh Yeah, I know that song! I Love it!". Of course, we threw a few surprises in there too - just to keep it interesting. ;-)
For DDR X, we had the "urban" theme to guide us so we went after music that follows this idea. Now, "urban" doesn't mean just Hip-Hop though. Urban environments are places where cultures collide and ideas such as music get shared. So X's music is a bit edgier, but still really exciting. Along side the smash-hits and well known songs are many tunes that are pushing the musical boundary - blending styles and genres.
Of course our over-riding rule when looking for music, from global hits to club anthems to underground masterpieces, is the "fun factor". Just because a song is popular doesn't mean it's going to be good for DDR. It has to be fun to play! I think we did a great job this year and we have some really solid tracks for both of these games. Enjoy - and definitely let us know your favorites (and least favorites)!
