It really depends on the song.  Take eminem... there's a lot of that I just don't like, but some like Lose Yourself, Without Me, and Stan are really quite good.  I don't like heavy slow beats with nothing but language...  If it's a faster tempo and it's got some good mixes in there, I'm happy.  The problem is, you start reaching that level, and maybe it's not classified as rap anymore.  Stronger by Kanye West is quite good (Daft Punk rules), but I don't think I would call it rap.

As with all types of music, I like some, but not all.  For rap, there are artists whose sound I like.  Tho' I don't listen to rap extensively.

I hate rap for the same reason I hate heavy Metal.

Think of the most annoying sound your ears have had the upmost misfortune to have ever heard... thats what Rap music is like to me.

Besides, majority of rap music has subliminal messages and is part of the reason why the young generation is so messed up, and getting worse by the year.  It's true what some comedians say about rap music too... back then in the 70's and maybe early 80's it used to have alot of soul and love... now it's all about who shot this person, or what drug he took and smoked, or what B!TC# he had S.E.X. with.

I think Rap is god-awful, and I am glad I have never bought a CD that was by a rap artist. I've seen songs from people like Soulja Boy, and cannot believe that they actually reach the top of the charts. Also, I love how people post lyrics to rap songs in their MySpace profiles, as if the lyrics are so profound. Ah, I remember the first time I read "Crank Dat" in poetry class. I mean, when I read that line: " I'm Jocking On Yo ***** ***" a tear came to my eye and I was inspired to write.

As a music major I appreciate the music style. I do have to say I don't enjoy hearing it or enjoy the messages in it.

Most of the rap music I hear I really don't like.  The format gives way too many jerks a chance to shout obscenities and nonsense into a mike and get paid for singing without actually being able to sing a note or write a coherent song.  Stop frontin' and go back to music school, twerps.

However, there are rappers who actually have talent and use the format well, and I enjoy their songs.  (Chants?) My favorite is MC Frontalot, originator of "nerdcore hiphop" Besides being funny (or ocasionally bitingly political) his work is just plain good, with smart lyrics and music that's more than drum loops.

About 98% of rap music I do not like.

There's been like one or two I've heard in my entire life that are okay, though.

It's all about production for me, and most of what I have heard is terrible.

It's not a bad genre if done right, honestly.

I had a new insight... I like many rap songs when I hear them on the radio, but then I hear the uncensored version and it's like "What am I listening to?"  Not that I can't fill in the blanks, but ... I don't know.  Maybe it's just me.

It depends on the quality for me. If it's good, I'll like it. If it's the same crap that's on the radio nowadays, I won't like it.

Wow, same here.  I can't stand 99% of rap music out there.  But what gets me is this:  If all of us seem to agree that it's terrible, are we all in the same "minority" group?  There's so much (c)rap at the top of the charts all the time, most people must like it right?  Who are these people?!

ps, I'm glad we're all in agreement here (finally a topic we mostly agree on).  Big happy community!

You lost me when you put "rap" and "music" together in the thread title.

For the most part, I hate it. Sometimes it's a bit amusing, though. The lyrics often make me laugh. I wish that people spent time listening to real music, though. It makes me angry when people tell me that I have no good music on my iPod because of the lack of rap. Rap lacks the substance that alternative, indie, acoustic, etc. have. I'm not a big fan of mainstream music in general.

Rap no longer exists. What they refer to as "Hip-Hop" is more prevalent now. Save for a few lyrical geniuses (50-Cent, Kanye, Eminem) most of the "crunk" rappers only glorify their lack of education. They instill horrid values in our children, placing money alcohol and drugs above traditional values such as family.

The rappers I mentioned may be filthy and talk about killing and drugs, but the way they weave a web of words to do so is amazing.

Take lil john and the eastside boyz, millions of dollars are literally thrown at an idiot for saying "what", "yeah" and "okay". I was brought up believing that hard work pays off, not having a sub-first grade vocabulary.

breakcore > everything

breakcore with rap/hip hop is okay, but rap by itself is kinda boring.

eminem and some others have a few good songs, but i don't go out of my way to listen to them.
