If edit mode stays the way it is, I think they should.  Here's why:

1)New Arcade mixes don't support memory cards anymore.  So edits can't be played on arcade machines.  Also, there are no official means of sharing edits without complicated memory card swapping and/or copy and paste from a video/sm.  So there isn't much personal gain for edits anymore.

2)SM is so much more useful for creating and sharing edits.  Unlike DDR, SM goes as small as 64th notes, and you can change bpms and freezes to your liking.  DDR only goes up to 16ths, making editing some songs impossible (ex: Fascination MAXX, bag).  And with SM, you don't need memory cards and stuff to share edits, just upload the SM to the internet and give a link.

3)Edits just aren't popular anymore because of the DDR's limiting edit mode.  Again, one would much rather edit a song using SM than DDR Edit Mode.

I believe Konami has two options:

a)Give Edit Mode SM functionality.  Things like 16ths-64ths, and the ability to change BPMs and freezes for the edit only.  Also, create a much easier way of sharing edits than swapping memory cards.  Add back arcade edit compatibility via something easier like USB.  And stop creating offsyncness (the offbeatness in Fascination MAXX is COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY, and a STUPID move by Konami).

or

b)Kick edit mode altogether.

It's one of those options, or keep a nearly useless and limited feature sitting in the game.

What are you guys' opinions on Edit Mode?

I don't use it... If they added a feature where you could upload your edits to Xbox LIVE and let others try out your new dance routine, I might... but until then... meh.... What's the point?

EDIT: Just so you know, I only play on the Xbox 360 versions.....

I've been using Edit Mode ever since Extreme 2. Sure you can make edits in SM, but unless you have a USB-enabled pad and a decent sized and positioned monitor, you can't even really play them.

True, Edit Mode should have more than 4ths/8ths/16ths, and should have a better way of sharing (Current-gen systems should make this easy whenever the main series of DDR crosses over). Stops and BPM changes uh...If you really want to I guess.

But there's no reason to scrap it if they don't add those features. I love making edits on home versions and playing them.

I think it would be hard for them to impliment BPM changes for anyone to use because what they use to make the files isn't just like Stepmania.

From what I know, the files all have BPM checkpoints, so really it's not one constant BPM through the file but many checkpoints of the same BPM (so yes constant but you knowwwww). That would mean if someone wanted to do BPM changes, someone would have to do a bit of reworking the engine.

well, it's less like it's an inconsistent bpm as it is a -fake- bpm. it was originally written to synch via the monitor (old arcade trick) and I don't know how recent versions (universe) do it but arcade versions kept that up for QUITE some time.

Edit: I've poked around with a few tools that actually let you look at the encoding done in early versions and the bpm -are- constant, just fyi.

Taking out Edit mode entirely would be a step backward. We need to step forward.

1. Allow 24ths/32nds/48ths/64ths.

2. Stop "fixing" triples, quads, hands, and stretch jumps.

3. Custom BPM changes and freezes. Imagine the possibilities.

4. Have the ability to share edits online.

5. Find a way to restore Link Mode to its former glory.

I live nowhere near an ITG2 machine, and I still wouldn't be too excited about playing my edits there. I mean, no banner/BG/Preview music makes it kinda lose it's "feel" for me. Not to mention that I happen to think the ITG interfaces, especially ITG2, are ugly.

Wow, so if DDR didn't have the banner, backgroud vids, and preview music you wouldn't play? That seems a bit... odd... The music would still play when you select the song, the banner is really irrelavent, I wouldn't care if Konami removed the banner in future releases and instead maybe gave you some stats about the song like number of steps, jumps, holds, etc. O WAIT Also it'd have better than stationary backgrounds.

As for your thoughts on the interface, I'll just keep to myself.

I would be disappointed if there was no edit mode.

There are some songs on the US home versions that I think they could have done a better job with the stepcharts. Songs like this I make my own edits for, and I enjoy doing it.

A good song should be challenging but not painful, have great music, and interesting steps. Songs like Flow (Jammin Ragga Mix) and Fly Away (the remix, not the original) have good steps that are hard but not insane. I've edited a few such as Paranoia KCET, Love Is Dreaminess, and Inside Your Heart because the original steps didn't work for me.

I wouldn't necesarily play that Pollinosis chart (Tongue out) but I pretty much agree with everything posted here.  I would REALLY like to see Link Mode come back.

I use edit mode all the time. Also I like doing edit mode on just DDR.

1) I use it for working out a warm-up

2) I use it work up my "ddr scales" to when the hard steps come up I can do them on a drop of a hat. :p

Please don't give rid of Edit mode.

I don't use edit mode. I find I would rather use someone elses edits, but getting them from online/computer to your memory card isn't the easiest thing.
