I'd like to see the series make its way to the PS3. I know the Sony DDR games generally follow the arcade releases, so I've been wondering if they did make the jump to HD with the PS3, would the arcade counterparts follow suite... say, with new cabinet design, etc. Kind of like an FX cabinet in the PiU series.
I'd love to be able to play a lot of classics with all the newer mods/features and would love to have a solid online mode. I think it would be cool to implement eamuse features, such as rankings/ghost data as they do in IIDX. Sure DDR isn't as competitive or varying in its scoring, but it would still be fun to compete like that. I know it would make a lot of people want to actually play the console versions online.
If a game is made for the PS3 as well, I think it would be cool if Konami were to sell or hook up with Sony to release a PS2 to PS3 adapter with the games. I mean, they could easilly package a DDR bundle with a PS2 pad, and include the adapter, this way people who use metal pads/arcade pads would be happy.
As far as graphics are concerned, I think having random bgs would be fine. I know the IIDX/GF/DM transplant songs that feature backgruonds in DDR are not in high-def resolutions, so I think it would be hard to transplant a lot of the backgrounds (Doll, Xepher, etc) without making them look warped/distorted. I don't think gaphics are too big of an issue though, I mean, just look at Disgaea 3.
I think a good idea for a DDR game on the PS3 is to do kind of what like they do with Rock Band and its DLC. I think their should be a lot of downloadable content, and it should be priced accordingly. For instance, KOs could be like 99 cents each, LICENSES 1.99 or something. Heck, they could probably even hook up with some artists to do special preorder bonuses and stuff as well. The game could probably come with 90-100 songs on it, and more could be added via DLC. If new DDRs come out, it might be cool to have the ability to install the songs from a previous game onto the new game, kind of like what they did back in the day with Beatmania 5k games. Since there is a HDD though, it would be cool to be able to save it to the HDD. I'm sure there could be some key system in place as well to keep people from installing 1 copy on like 50 PS3s.
As people have said too, the new PS3s (40gb) don't have backward compatibility, only the 60 and 80 gb ones do. As the market moves forward, it seems like the jump will have to happen.
